We appreciate the recent Comment by Joshua R Wortzel and colleagues,1 published in The Lancet Planetary Health, for highlighting the mounting evidence linking increased temperature to poor mental health and the need for identifying causal mechanisms. The authors refer to a meta-analysis, which revealed that a 1oC rise in mean daily temperature was associated with a 1·7% increase in suicides, and a 1oC rise in mean monthly temperature was associated with a 1·5% increase in suicides.2 This focus is welcome, as suicide is a global public health concern that might be impacted by climate change. However, we would like to clarify epidemiological terminology used in the Comment and urge the authors and wider field to assess suicidality in addition to depressive symptomatology. |
