Os dados históricos sobre João Baptista e o culto que lhe foi pago pelos seus devotos mostram, em particular, o problema e as consequências que dele derivam para a fé dos crentes. Se um olhar geral sobre o seu culto na esfera católica romana nos últimos séculos nos permite detectar o pouco relevante lugar reservado para ele, o meio hispano-americano é particularmente útil para perceber os restos de uma religiosidade quase mítica em relação ao Baptista, que favorece a cultura mas não presta atenção ao impacto do Evangelho nas várias esferas da vida social. Através de um método hermenêutico que procura ser crítico, o artigo retoma a conotação mística do precursor de Jesus que, na minha opinião, pode contribuir para re-significar o seu papel na fé cristã, Devoção, evangelho, história, igrejas |

Contemporary historiography and sociology have found contradictions between the devotion to certain Christian saints and the effective itinerary of life of eachone of them. The historical data about John the Baptist and the cult that his devotees pay him show, in particular, the problem and the consequences derivedfrom it for the faith of believers. If a general look at its worship in the Roman Catholic sphere of the last centuries allows us to detect the little relevant place that has been reserved for it, the Spanish-American environment is particularly useful for perceiving the remains of an almost mythical religiosity with respect to the Baptist, which favors yes cultural but does not attend to the incidences of the gospel in the various spheres of social life. Through an hermeneutic method searching for a critical view, the article retakes the mystical connotation of the forerunner of Jesus can contribute, in my opinion, to re-signifying his role in the Christian faith. ; La historiografía y la sociología contemporáneas han ido hallando contradicciones entre la devoción a ciertos santos cristianos y el efectivo itinerario de vida decada uno de ellos. Los datos históricos acerca de Juan el Bautista y el culto que le tributan sus devotos muestran, en concreto, el problema y las consecuenciasderivadas de él para la fe de los creyentes. Si una mirada general a su culto en el ámbito católico romano de los últimos siglos permite detectar el lugar poco relevanteque se le ha reservado, el medio hispanoamericano resulta particularmente útil para percibir los restos de una religiosidad casi mítica respecto del Bautista,que propicia sí lo cultural pero no atiende a las incidencias del evangelio en los diversos ámbitos de la vida social.
