Description: The article discusses methods of teaching English in higher technical education institutions for foreign language studies. It emphasizes the need to develop students’ listening and speaking skills in a professional field. The Callan Method adapted to specific learning conditions, is recommended when students have difficulties in speaking and understanding spoken English. Justifications are provided for using this method as supplementary material or an adaptive teaching strategy. The article states that current legislation in Ukraine requires proficiency in English for certain positions, which serves as additional motivation for students to learn the language. The increasing use of English in public spheres highlights the need for an optimally organized learning process that aligns with modern requirements and real teaching conditions. The author examines various foreign language teaching methods, with a particular focus on the Callan Method. To date, this method has not been widely implemented in higher education institutions. Classroom instruction using the Callan Method is time-consuming and offers a limited vocabulary. However, it can be effective for students who experience psychological barriers to using a foreign language. Also, lessons using this method enrich the vocabulary with phrases and set expressions. The author suggests using this method to practice spoken English when preparing students of higher technical educational institutions. It is suggested to use the Callan method when preparing individual topics that require active listening and speaking in English. For such topics, a sufficient number of typical syntactic structures, including interrogative sentences and corresponding responses, can be developed. The aim of this study is to substantiate the adapted use of the Callan method as a tool for enhancing listening and speaking skills and as a tool for helping students overcome psychological barriers to using English. The introduction of new and the adaptation of existing English teaching methods are crucial for improving language education in Ukraine.
У статті розглядаються методики опанування англійської мови, що застосовуються при вивченні іноземних мов у закладах вищої освіти. Констатується необхідність забезпечення розвитку у студентів навичок аудіювання та говоріння для англійської мови за професійним спрямуванням. Вказується на можливість застосування адаптованого до умов викладання методу Каллана при виникненні у студенів труднощів із говорінням та сприйняттям на слух англійської мови. Наводяться обґрунтування використання зазначеного методу як додаткового матеріалу або як адаптивної стратегії викладання.
