Περιγραφή: Subject. Eagle’s syndrome is the common name of a constellation of clinical symptoms associated with anomalies of size and location of styloid processes of the temporal bone and calcification of stylohyoid ligament. The last one connects the temporal bone styloid process with a small horn of the hyoid bone. The syndrome was first described by the American otorhinolaryngologist W.W. Eagle in 1937. Today a few synonyms of this syndrome are known: Eagle’s syndrome, Eagle-Sterling syndrome, stylo-hypoglossal syndrome. All of them describe the same clinical picture. The problem of diagnosis of this syndrome is the variety of symptoms. Therefore, the patients with such problems apply to dentists, otorhinolaryngologists, neurologists and even oncologists. Usually the Eagle’s syndrome is unilateral. There are two clinical forms: stylo-pharyngeal and stylo-carotid. Due to the physical layout of these structures and their pathologies, the following complaints are detected in patients: foreign body sensation in the throat chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the throat pain in the temporomandibular joint pain and noise in ears unilateral and bilateral orbital and headaches “shooting” pain when turning head. M. Kiely and coauthors described the distribution of pain in the sterno-clavicular-mastoid muscle, and D. Savic in supraclavicular fossa, shoulder and anterior chest wall. The aim of the research. Detection of identical symptoms in temporomandibular disorders and Eagle’s syndrome. Material and methods. The study is based on 235 patients with suspected temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Results of the research. The detailed clinical examination of 235 patients with suspected TMD data and additional surveys revealed 4 patients with Eagle’s syndrome, representing 1.7%, and 2 patients with fractures of the styloid processes of temporal bone – 0.9%. Thus, in 2.6% of examined patients with suspected TMD the diagnosis was not confirmed, and irregularities were detected in styloid processes of temporal bone. In the analysis database of 235 patients on separate nosological forms, TMD revealed a significant predominance in females. Sometimes there were only females. After calculation of the results, patients with fractures of styloid processes of temporal bone and Eagle’s syndrome with unconfirmed diagnosis of TMD, it was detected that all patients were women. The age ranged from 38 to 54 years. Conclusions. 1. Patients with such abnormalities often turn to other medical specialists. During the dentist’s examination patients complain of the temporomandibular joint and muscles of maxillofacial area. Actually, Eagle’s syndrome or fractures of styloid processes are often found by accident during additional surveys. 2. Identical symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and problems of styloid process were verified. 3. The likelihood of imitation TMD pathologies by styloid process pathologies was confirmed. 4. The attention is focused on thorough examination of patients with suspected TMD to detect simulated disorders, such as pathology of styloid processes. 5. Attention is drawn to the domination of women with diagnosed pathology of styloid processes. 6. Difficulties of diagnosis of these pathologies are caused by significant variety of symptoms that can belong to several medical specialties. The lack of exact diagnostic criteria for this disease was discovered.
