Description:	The article reveals the prerequisites of the interest in research made into collective memory. A great significance of the holistic understanding of the functioning of collective memory is shown. The article dwells upon the evolution of sociological views on the phenomenon of memory, which led to the creation of the concept of cultural memory. This article describes the ideas of the following scientists: Halbwachs, Warburg, Vygotsky, Bakhtin, Assmann, Nora and Lotman. It supports the conclusion that the past does not belong to objective reality, but rather it is an actual product of cultural memory. В статье раскрываются предпосылки возникновения интереса к изучению коллективной памяти. Показана особенная актуальность целостного понимания функционирования коллективной памяти в наши дни. Прослеживается эволюция социологических взглядов на феномен памяти, приведший к созданию концепции культурной памяти. Статья описывает взгляды таких ученых как Хальбвакс, Варбург, Выготский, Бахтин, Ассман, Нора и Лотман. Подтверждается вывод о том, что прошлое является не объективной данностью, а актуальным продуктом культурной памяти.
