Description: Based on the Italian architect Luigi Moretti (1907-1973) original drawings and his theoretical writings published in the journal Spazio. Rassegna delle arti e dell’architettura, the expected contribution investigates the understanding of the constructive logic of tectonic forms in his work. In the article entitled Struttura come forma, published in 1951 Moretti affirms that the work of architecture, as a product of technological, functional and expressive order, is “reality and representation”, identifying architecture as a representation of the construction. His studies of Roman and Baroque architecture stem from an analysis of architecture as an expression of a constructive feeling. In the article titled Valori della modanatura, published in the journal Spazio in 1952, Luigi Moretti tries to under-stand the notion of modanatura [moulding] as the identification of the horizontal orders of construction. In an article titled Le strutture ideali della arhitettura di Michelangelo e dei baroc-chi, quoting Michelangelo and Borromini, Moretti analyses the nature of the building in archi-tecture. For Moretti, architecture “is essentially structure”, perceiving structure in the sense of mathematical logic, that is, a “set of relations”. The essence of architecture does not consist so much in its values as regards plasticity, construction or function but in the ordered interrela-tion of various aspects and the coherence of its structure.
