Staśko Markiewicz: Between Ireland and Poland is the final instalment of the Markievicz Trilogy,’ bringing an end to the story of the Markiewicz connection between Ireland and Poland that began when Casimir danced with Constance Gore- Booth at the student dance in Paris in early 1899. The previous volumes were ThePolish Irishman: The Life and Times of Count Casimir Markievicz (2012) and Sisters Against the Empire: Countess Markievicz and Eva Gore-Booth (2016). Staśko’s story, the last to be published, had its origins before the others in the early 2000s when Elizabeth Rowlette brought me copies of the correspondence from Staśko toEdward Rowlette in 1940.Staśko had to wait to the end to have his story told for a number of reasons. Irish publishers thought his story interesting, but he was not a celebrity like his parents and the book would not sell. This appeared unfair as Staśko played a vital role in our knowledge of Casimir and Constance; his research provided much of the sourcematerial for the previous volumes. He should, at the very least, be remembered for helping to preserve Constance’s wonderful Prison Journals of 1916-17, which he donated to the National Museum of Ireland.Work on these books has extended over the past decade and has resulted in large number of people to be acknowledged. Hopefully, the length of the project will not mean anyone has been excluded. My main thanks are due to my good friend, Jarosław Płachecki, who encouraged me to continue with the project and has contributed so much in the preparation and printing of the book. |
