Geography's ability to interpret topographic maps and orthophotographs, adoption prediction, and learning activities to promote responsible usage in classroomsLearners, student teachers and even teachers find it challenging to interpret topographic maps and orthophotographs. Thus, a chatbot which can interpret these media may be useful in geography classrooms. Although the chatbot, Geography, was trained as geography expert, no research is available regarding its abilities and limitations. Thus, the purpose of this multi-phase mixed methods research was threefold, namely (a) to explore Geography's ability to interpret topographic maps and orthophotographs, (b) to determine the factors which can drive its adoption, and (c) to suggest learning activities to promote responsible use in geography classrooms. During the first phase, an explorative case revealed that Geography can be useful to calculate distances, scale and vertical exaggeration, but users must provide map distances and heights. Although it cannot draw cross sections, it can identify a cross section on a map and calculate both gradient and vertical exaggeration needing minimum input from users. However, its ability to identify slopes and landforms is limited, and it could not determine bearing or direction from one place to another. As it can be useful, the artificial intelligence adoption prediction model (AIAPM) was employed during the second phase to determine the factors which can drive the adoption of Geography. Based on the high adoption prediction score, namely six (out of nine), a design-based study was integrated in the last phase to suggest strategies for responsible use of this chatbot in geography classrooms. |
