Introduction. The quality of the learning process is always high on the agenda. Educational institutions implement the State standards developed for them, the teaching staff prepares methodological materials, designs curricula and assessment tools, and interacts with students in the electronic educational environment. But what do we know about the statistical controllability of the learning process? What are its validation and verification? Is the learning process eligible to be considered from the process approach perspective? The questions became particularly topical during the rapid transition of the education system to distance learning formats. The study aims to analyze the process of conducting interim assessments of student progress, using the case of an individual university department, by means of the Shewhart control charts method and to identify the causes and conditions of the process implementation. The objectives of the study are to make control charts based on the data collected about the process, and present the charts visually as graphs; analyze the results obtained; determine the process variation characteristics. Today, the quality of learning processes is assessed in accordance with the principles of quality management system, where learning is considered as a system and as a process that has itsinputs (customer requirements) and outputs (customer satisfaction). In order to manage the entire educational process, it is necessary to manage its subprocesses. Processes require continual measurement, analysis, and improvement. However, it is only possible to measure and analyze processes when the accumulated data array allows. In this paper, an attempt is made to analyze one of the learning processes using data collected over a four-year period and by employing the Shewhart control charts method. Conclusion. The study of the process "conducting interim assessments", which was carried out at an individual university department during four years, showed that in the period 2020-2021 there were special causes of variation in the process; the presence of these causes characterizes the process as unstable and unpredictable. The most significant cause was the transition to distance learning. Special reasons require a case-by-case approach to decision-making, as well as special attention to "accuracy" as a characteristic of variation.
