| Description: | The article analyzes the course of secret negotiations between the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR N.S. Khrushchev and Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Mao Zedong, held during the unofficial visit of the Soviet leader to China from 31 July to 3 August 1958. This article delves into the discussed topics, respective positions, contentious issues, and causes of dissatisfaction among negotiators during negotiations between China and the Soviet Union. The factors contributing to the cooling of relations and the diminishing cooperation between the parties post-negotiations are examined. These factors include Mao Zedong’s discontent with the Soviet Union’s insistence on establishing military-technical cooperation while retaining control over supplied technical means and strategic weapons, as well as joint military contingents. Additionally, a complex of grievances towards the dictates of Soviet leaders, accumulated by the Chinese side, and the errors of Soviet diplomacy are explored. Mao Zedong’s assertiveness, coupled with an overestimation of the USSR’s reliance on support from China, is also analyzed. In an appendix to this article, forthcoming in subsequent issues of the journal, transcripts of three conversations between the leaders of both nations from the archives of the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History (RGANI) will be published, previously undisclosed in their original language. В статье освещается ход секретных переговоров между Первым секретарем ЦК КПСС, Председателем Совета министров СССР Н.С. Хрущевым с Председателем ЦК КПК, Председателем КНР Мао Цзэдуном, состоявшихся в ходе неофициального визита советского руководителя в Китай с 31 июля по 3 августа 1958 г. Раскрываются обсуждавшиеся темы, позиции сторон, наиболее дискуссионные вопросы, причины недовольства переговорщиков друг другом. Показаны факторы, обусловившие охлаждение отношений сторон и свертывание сотрудничества между ними после переговоров: недовольство Мао Цзэдуна стремлением советской стороны строить военно-техническое сотрудничество, оставляя за СССР контроль над поставляемыми техническими средствами и стратегическими вооружениями, а также над совместными военными контингентами; комплекс обид на диктат советских руководителей, копившихся китайской стороной; ошибки советской дипломатии; резкость Мао Цзэдуна, переоценившего зависимость СССР от поддержки со стороны КНР. В приложении к данной статье, которое выйдет в следующих двух выпусках журнала, будут опубликованы стенограммы трех бесед лидеров двух стран из фондов РГАНИ, не обнародованных ранее на языке оригинала. |
