Περιγραφή: The Business Intelligence (BI) environment of an organisation is defined as an environment where large volumes of data are processed in reaction to advanced analytical queries, which in turn imposes a heavy burden on the underlying database management systems. The larger the volume of the data, the longer it takes to respond to these queries hence limiting the interactive analytical capabilities modern BI systems are supposed to facilitate. In this chapter, a number of optimisation strategies aimed at improving the BI query execution performance are reviewed with a focus on indexing techniques, query optimisation algorithms, materialised views, and the particular workload characteristics of Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) and Online Transaction Processing (OLTP). Based on benchmark reviews of the major database platforms, it develops a complete model of how to optimise the database performance within a BI environment. Performance improvements of several orders of magnitude have been demonstrated by implementations in diverse industrial applications, providing database administrators and BI architects with the knowledge they need to implement the same strategies into production environments.
