Description: The purpose of this study is to investigate the semantic processing of paralexis and its characteristics from a cognitive perspective of native Korean speakers. Previous studies on paralexis have mainly focused on analyzing semantic differences between lexical items, but they have provided limited explanations of how speakers cognitively perceive and select similar words in actual language use. This study utilizes the synonym similarity perception data reported in Shin(2024a) to examine how native Korean speakers perceive paralexis. The results show that speakers tend to recognize paralexis as forming a continuous semantic structure with central and peripheral members rather than as a fixed category. In addition, lexical selection is influenced not only by conceptual meaning but also by pragmatic factors such as style, emotion, reflection, and collocation. Based on these findings, this study examines the characteristics of paralexis in terms of semantic processing and explains paralexis as a linguistic phenomenon constructed through processes of storage, activation, and selection in the speaker’s cognitive system.
