Urban flooding is an escalating crisis for cities as climate change and human-induced environmental transformations threaten communities and urban ecosystems. The conventional flood-control hard engineering methods have shown limited long-term effectiveness. In response, many cities have adopted resilience-oriented approaches that seek to mitigate flood risk while enhancing social cohesion and preserving ecological balance. This research investigates adaptive design principles for urban floodplains that achieves social and ecological resilience, providing a transferable framework for resilient floodplain design in a local scale like Osney Island, Oxford. This research employs case study analysis and inquiry-by-design methods. To start with, case studies from Taipei and London are analysed using an analytical framework built from the literature review. Design principles are then distilled and tested through the Osney Island site. While the resulting design principles may not be universally applicable. Nevertheless, the research provides guidance for urban designers and landscape architects in developing resilient urban floodplain strategies that enhance people and the environment. |
