Aim: To evaluate the effect of multiple firings and shading on the dimensional accuracy of monolithic multilayered zirconia crowns. Materials and Methods: Forty-five monolithic multilayered zirconia crowns (Cercon HT ML, Dentsply Sirona) were milled in three shades (A1, A2, A4; n=15 each) from a prepared typodont tooth design. After an initial reference scan of the intaglio surface using an intraoral scanner (Primescan, Dentsply Sirona), the crowns were subjected to six firing cycles. The intaglio surface was scanned after the second, fourth, and sixth cycles to record dimensional changes. Dimensional accuracy was quantified using root mean square (RMS) values, and the uniformity of change was quantified with standard deviation (SD) values using the Geomagic Control X software v24.2.0 (Stockholm, Sweden). Data were analysed using a two-way mixed ANOVA and Simple Main Effects Analysis. Results: Repeated firings had a substantial impact on dimensional accuracy (p<0.01), exhibiting a V-shaped pattern. Initially, there was an improvement in fit, followed by subsequent distortion. Although the overall shade effect was not statistically significant (p=0.630), a simple main effects analysis revealed shade-dependent outcomes. Darker shades (A2, A4) demonstrated significant non-linear fluctuations (p<0.05), while shade A1 remained stable (p=0.126). Conclusion: Repeated firings and darker shades increase the material's sensitivity to thermal treatments, causing statistically significant dimensional changes. However, these dimensional fluctuations remain clinically negligible. Clinicians can safely perform multiple corrective firings on these restorations, regardless of shade, without compromising their final fit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
