Background/Aims: Reflective practice is a core skill in midwifery, but there is limited research exploring how student midwives experience the reflective learning process. This study aimed to explore this to enhance reflective education. Methods: Focus groups were conducted with 20 undergraduate midwifery students. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and the theoretical domains framework. Results: Three themes described the students' experience: through the looking glass, identifying students' robust motivation for reflective practice; crafting the reflective palette, which examined the range of reflective formats that students experience; and the reflective residence, exploring how students identify reflective practice in the wider midwifery context. Conclusions: Flexible and inclusive approaches to teaching reflective practice could positively impact the way that students manage the current demands of midwifery practice. Implications for practice: Student midwives' reflective development may be positively impacted by broadening reflective teaching methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
