| Abstract (English): |
The article addresses the phenomenon of medieval colored pencil glosses, particularly their use, material composition, and the acute endangerment of these entries on parchment. Colored pencil glosses, which apply pigments with binders, adhere poorly to parchment and are therefore especially sensitive to light and touch, leading to irretrievable losses in recent decades. Using the example of the manuscript Munich, Bavarian State Library, Clm 18556a, which contains numerous Old High German stylus and colored pencil glosses, the precarious state of preservation is documented and a new, comprehensive edition of the glosses is presented. The article calls for increased protective measures, a materials-scientific study of the pigments, and the creation of a Red List of endangered linguistic monuments in order to secure the preservation of these unique medieval testimonies. | Abstract (German): |
Besides quills and styluses, coloured pencils were also used for recording glosses in the Middle Ages. This technique is proving increasingly problematic, as colour does not adhere well to the parchment, which is why coloured pencil glosses are at considerable risk. Some of them have demonstrably been irretrievably lost in recent times. The glosses in the manuscript München, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 18556a, represent a particularly alarming case. This article recalls the peculiar transmission of coloured pencil glosses and demonstrates their precarious status using the aforementioned glosses as examples. The relevant corpus is presented in its entirety in a new edition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
