The article examines the Indo-Iranian roots *d?vans- and *d?vanH-, represented by Vedic forms such as dhva?s- and dhvani- as well as Avestan and Middle to New East Iranian verbs like duuan- and related forms. Through a detailed semantic analysis of the earliest attestations in both language branches, it is argued that these roots could be etymologically related, with *d?vans- considered an s-extension of *d?vanH-, and that both originally had the meaning "to fall like dust, to be scattered." The article shows that the previous translation of Avestan duuan- as "to fly" and Vedic dhvani- as "to smoke, to emit smoke" is problematic and instead proposes meanings such as "to fall, to scatter, to throw," which correspond better with the Iranian reflexes. Furthermore, morphological parallels in nominal derivations in the Veda and Avesta are demonstrated, supporting the common semantic basis. Finally, an overview of the forms and meanings of the two roots is provided, and methodological problems in the reconstruction are discussed. [Extracted from the article] |
