On September 2, 1945, as the anticolonial struggle spread across French Indochina, Ho Chi Minh presented the Declaration of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam at a mass meeting in Hanoi. The proclamation opened with a citation of the 1776 American Declaration of Independence: "All men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights; among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
