The article examines the implications of treating agentic AI systems—AI with autonomous task execution capabilities—as employees within organizations. Research involving over 1,200 managers across multiple industries reveals that humanizing AI by assigning it employee-like roles can blur accountability, increase unnecessary escalation for review, reduce quality control, and undermine employees’ professional identity and trust. Despite these challenges, framing AI as an employee does not significantly boost adoption rates; instead, managerial encouragement plays a larger role in integration. The authors recommend that organizations focus on redesigning workflows, clarifying human roles and accountability, building employee capabilities for AI oversight, and deliberately evolving work to enable effective human-AI collaboration rather than equating AI agents directly with human employees.
