| Περίληψη: | Biodegradable plastic waste offers an opportunity for anaerobic fermentation to produce value-added chemicals, reducing the carbon footprint and enabling the upcycling of plastic waste. This study introduces a novel in-situ thiosulfate pretreatment strategy to enhance the anaerobic fermentation of two representative biodegradable plastic wastes-polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and polylactic acid (PLA) -into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The results indicated that this pretreatment significantly enhanced the degradation and acid production efficiency of the biodegradable plastic PHA. After adding 1000 mg S/L of thiosulfate, the degradation rate of PHA increased significantly from 69.71 ± 0.99% to 97.69 ± 0.40%, boosting SCFA yield from 1286.3 ± 78.8 mg COD/L to 4447.3 ± 375.9 mg COD/L. In contrast, PLA plastic exhibited minimal degradation, with rates below 10%. Surface and composition analyses indicated that thiosulfate accelerated PHA aging and fragmentation, enhancing microbial colonization. Microbial community analysis revealed that thiosulfate pretreatment enhanced the abundance of potential plastic-degrading bacteria (e.g., Caldisericum, Pseudomonas) and acidogenic bacteria (e.g., Clostridium_sensu_stricto_7, Fonticella), with their total abundance rising from 37.4% in the non-thiosulfate group to 47.1% in the 1000 mg S/L thiosulfate group. Molecular ecological networks (MENs) and metabolic pathway analyses further demonstrated that thiosulfate strengthened interactions between plastic-degrading and acidogenic bacteria, as well as their associated gene expression, thereby improving the efficiency of plastic waste degradation and acidogenesis. This study offers an environmentally friendly and efficient strategy for recycling resources from plastic waste. (Copyright © 2026 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.) |
