Assessing ecosystem service performance in urbanized areas requires attention to both service generation and spatial transmission, yet most assessments emphasize supply or generalized landscape units. This study evaluates the coupled performance of service-providing areas (SPAs) and service-connecting areas (SCAs) in Jinan, China, across eight ecosystem service types. Service-specific indicators describing landscape structure, landscape pattern, and geographical characteristics were evaluated using an integrated TOPSIS–grey relational analysis–vector projection procedure, followed by secondary equal-weight aggregation and performance-based optimization zoning. The results show marked spatial heterogeneity. At the comprehensive level, 68.89% of SPAs were medium-performing and 21.52% were low-performing, whereas 50.74% of SCAs were low-performing and only 11.87% were high-performing. Service-specific deficits were concentrated in several functions: 68.24% of air-purification SPAs and 62.99% of climate-regulation SPAs were low-performing; 59.23% of flood-prevention SCAs were low-performing; 97.83% of water-purification SCAs were low- to medium-performing; and 81.28% of SPAs for surface-water supply were low-performing. The zoning results identified high-, medium-, and low-sensitivity areas covering 57.16%, 37.44%, and 5.40%, respectively, of the primary optimization zones; SCA restoration and bidirectional restoration zones dominated the high-sensitivity category. These findings indicate that service-connecting areas are an important constraint on ecosystem service performance in urbanized areas. Spatial planning and ecological restoration should therefore prioritize service-specific interventions and coordinate improvements in SPAs and SCAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
