Two experiments with college students were conducted to examine if the learning experience that produces a stimulus class affects subsequent class reorganization when contingencies change. In Phase 1 of each experiment, one group received equivalence-based instruction according to a one-to-many (OTM) training structure to establish three 4-member equivalence classes. Another group received comprehensive instruction (CI), in which the same four-member classes were established by directly training all possible relations among putative class members. In Phase 2, both groups received identical reorganization training with a subset of stimulus relations from each class. On a subsequent reorganization test, a majority of the OTM-history participants, but only about half of the CI-history participants, demonstrated complete reorganization of the classes established in Phase 1. Mean accuracy, however, was significantly greater in the OTM group only in Experiment 1, in which reorganization training followed an OTM structure, and not in Experiment 2, in which it followed a linear series structure. The results may suggest that under some circumstances, OTM-established classes show greater coherence as behavioral units compared to CI-established classes. Additional research could clarify the source of this effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
