Περίληψη: The karst region of Southwest China, the world’s largest contiguous karst area and a typical ecologically vulnerable zone, plays a crucial role in achieving sustainability goals. Owing to its distinctive geographical and ecological conditions, this region presents more stringent demands for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, currently, there is relatively limited understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution trend of the ecosystem services importance (ESI) in the karst region of Southwest China. The extent of its contribution to Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and SDGs, as well as the existing gaps, remain unclear. This study focuses on the karst region in Southwest China, quantitatively assesses seven ecosystem services (ESs), and elucidates the spatiotemporal dynamics of these services during the implementation periods of the MDGs and SDGs. It also clarifies and evaluates the changing trend of the ESI. The results show that: except for habitat quality and carbon storage, all other ESs were restored during the MDG-SDG transition period; the ESI exhibited a steady downward trend. By 2020, the proportion of extremely important areas had reached 30.23%, which were mainly concentrated in the mountainous areas of southwestern Hubei and southern Yunnan. Land use type and rock properties determine the spatial pattern of regional ecosystem services importance, while population density and GDP are the main driving forces for the evolution of ESI. The interaction of factors enhances its spatiotemporal differentiation, and the evolution of ESI is the result of the comprehensive action of multiple factors. Ecological protection policies and ecological restoration projects of China have gradually improved the ecological environment situation in the study area. Currently, this region is actively striving to meet the standards of the SDGs. This research provides theoretical and scientific support for ecological restoration, ES enhancement, and SDG advancement in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
