Abstract: Arsenic-containing zinc residues from non-ferrous smelting, particularly zinc arsenate, are hazardous and difficult to treat because conventional methods commonly suffer from incomplete arsenic removal, secondary pollution, and limited resource recovery. In this study, a solid-phase sulfidation-volatilization process was developed using coking sulfur paste (CSP), an industrial by-product, as a low-cost bifunctional reagent for reduction and sulfidation. Under oxygen-free conditions, zinc arsenate was selectively converted into volatile As 2 O 3 and stable ZnS. Under the optimized conditions of 700 °C, S/As = 11, and 90 min, arsenic removal reached 99.73%, and the residue consisted predominantly of high-purity ZnS. The resulting As 2 O 3 -S 8 condensate was further separated under reduced pressure (5 Pa) by temperature-gradient condensation in a multi-zone tube furnace with a heating zone at 200 °C, yielding high-purity As 2 O 3 (99.87%) and S 8 (99.26%). This process avoids hazardous reagents and arsenic-containing wastewater, reduces global warming potential by 65-70% relative to carbon-based roasting, and enables closed-loop sulfur circulation. By converting two hazardous wastes into three value-added products, this work provides a clean, efficient, and economically attractive route for arsenic-bearing waste treatment and resource recovery. [Display omitted] • First application of coking sulfur paste (CSP) for the treatment of zinc arsenate waste. • The arsenic removal rate can reach 99.73%; zinc is immobilised in the form of high-purity ZnS. • High-purity As 2 O 3 and S 8 can be isolated using a multi-stage temperature-gradient vacuum separation method. • Closed-loop sulfur recycle; no secondary wastewater or arsine emission.
