The government adopts various subsidies to support clean energy technological innovation, but their effectiveness and associated mechanisms need to be clarified. Thus, the various mechanisms of R&D subsidies (RDSs) and non-R&D subsidies (NRDSs) are derived from a partial equilibrium model. Unlike the general subsidy data in the existing literature, the detailed subsidies received by Chinese listed clean energy companies (CECs) are manually collected and classified into 2 categories (RDSs and NRDSs) and 7 subcategories. It is found that RDSs have an “inverted U-shaped” impact on the innovation of CECs, whereas NRDSs have a “U-shaped” impact. Among RDSs, talent development subsidies and government innovation awards, focusing on the research staff and the research achievement, respectively, may induce companies to seek strategic innovation rather than substantive innovation; however, innovation and development subsidies that focus on the research project do not suffer from this problem. Among NRDSs, excessive social security subsidies may lead to a dependency mentality among companies; however, enterprise support subsidies and energy conservation and environmental protection subsidies do not have such a problem. Moreover, RDSs can induce state-owned, large, and eastern companies to pursue strategic innovation, but also effectively promote substantive innovation among small companies and those in the central region.
