| Abstract: |
The article focuses on Poland's plan to restore regular tax rates on fuels as peace talks between the US and Iran advance. Since April, Poland had reduced value added tax (VAT) and excise taxes on fuels to keep gasoline prices among the lowest in the European Union, subsidizing the cost at an estimated 1.6 billion zloty ($436 million) per month. With an interim peace deal expected to ease tensions and stabilize fuel prices, the government announced it will end the excise tax reduction by the end of June while maintaining lower VAT rates for the last two weeks of the month. Poland aims to address its record budget deficit by introducing a windfall tax on oil companies to offset the cost of the subsidies. [Extracted from the article] |
