AbstractVirtual reality (VR) provides a fundamentally different sensory experience that can affect skilled movement execution. This study examined visuomotor learning and transfer following VR and real-world training. Forty-three participants trained on a rapid reaching task before completing the same task on a real-world apparatus. Initial training on the reaching task was performed either in VR or on the same real-world apparatus (n = 20 per condition after exclusion). Upon transfer to the real-world task, VR-trained participants initially exhibited longer movement times than those trained physically. Kinematic timing analyses indicated that for the VR-trained participants, increased movement times were primarily driven by a longer delay between peak velocity and button activation, suggesting increased reliance on late-stage movement corrections. VR-trained participants also demonstrated longer pre-movement times during the first transfer block. These findings indicate that while VR training can support pre-motor and sensorimotor learning, it may be less effective than real-world training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
