Περίληψη: The article focuses on a 2025 scientific expedition led by researchers from the Arctic University of Norway and Germany aboard the icebreaker Kronprins Haakon to investigate the history of sea ice at the North Pole. The team collected sediment cores up to 22 meters long from the Arctic seafloor to determine whether the region had been ice-free in recent geological history and to better understand the implications of current Arctic warming. Using advanced dating techniques and chemical analyses, including the study of the ice-algae biomarker IP25, the researchers aim to reconstruct past Arctic conditions and improve climate projections related to marine ecosystems, ocean circulation, and extreme weather. This work is part of a €12.5 million European Union-funded project addressing the rapid decline of Arctic sea ice observed since the late 1970s. [Extracted from the article]
