The interaction of a buoyancy-driven reacting plume with a partially permeable single-layer obstacle was investigated using n-heptane pool-fire experiments and large-eddy simulations. The obstacle interrupts the continuous axial transport of the plume and redistributes the flow, fuel vapor, and thermal energy between gap penetration and lateral bypass. At an obstacle height of 20 cm, the concentrated continuous-flame region penetrates predominantly through the gaps, whereas increasing the obstacle height to 30–50 cm allows greater plume spreading, ambient-air entrainment, and oscillation before impingement, leading to stronger lateral diversion, flow separation, recirculation, and locally restricted flame development. The resulting flame heights are substantially lower than the Heskestad free-flame predictions, and an H/D-based correlation quantifies the dependence of normalized flame height on the relative obstacle position. The obstacle also reorganizes the thermal plume into a heat-accumulation region below the obstacle, a rapid temperature-transition region near it, and an entrainment-cooled region above it. The temperature remains approximately 800–900 °C near the fire source but decreases abruptly after plume–obstacle interaction. A localized pressure-deficit region is spatially associated with flow reversal and vortical structures near the obstacle. A modified McCaffrey-based correlation describes the resulting zonal centerline temperature decay. These results identify the flow-partitioning and pressure-mediated recirculation mechanisms through which a partially permeable obstacle reorganizes a variable-density reacting plume.
