Abstract: \nHighlights: Accurate and rapid non-destructive assay of nuclear materials is critical for nuclear safeguards and arms control. To overcome the limitations of conventional thermal neutron multiplicity counting—such as long measurement times and high susceptibility to accidental coincidences—we developed and validated a fast neutron multiplicity counting (FNMC) system. Our system employs six EJ-301 organic liquid scintillation detectors, leveraging their excellent pulse-shape discrimination and fast timing capabilities. We established a comprehensive Geant4 Monte Carlo model to simulate the system’s response and systematically evaluated different time-correlation analysis methods. The Multiplicity Shift Register (MSR) technique, with an optimized 60 ns coincidence gate, was found to exhibit superior performance, enabling a simulated mass determination accuracy of 0.4% for a 1 μg 252Cf source. Experimental measurements of a 252Cf source demonstrated the system’s practical viability, achieving a mass error of 7.33%. The primary sources of discrepancy between simulation and experiment were identified as imperfect neutron-gamma discrimination and inter-detector neutron cross-talk, which provide clear directions for subsequent system optimization.A six-detector FNMC system was validated for rapid 252Cf assay.Geant4 simulations identified MSR with a 60 ns gate as the most accurate method.Neutron-gamma discrimination and cross-talk were the main limits on measurement accuracy.A six-detector FNMC system was validated for rapid 252Cf assay.Geant4 simulations identified MSR with a 60 ns gate as the most accurate method.Neutron-gamma discrimination and cross-talk were the main limits on measurement accuracy.
