To overcome the limitations of conventional thermal neutron multiplicity counting—such as long measurement times and high susceptibility to accidental coincidences—we developed and validated a fast neutron multiplicity counting (FNMC) system. Our system employs six EJ-301 organic liquid scintillation detectors, leveraging their excellent pulse-shape discrimination and fast timing capabilities. We established a comprehensive Geant4 Monte Carlo model to simulate the system’s response and systematically evaluated different time-correlation analysis methods. The Multiplicity Shift Register (MSR) technique, with an optimized 60 ns coincidence gate, was found to exhibit superior performance, enabling a simulated mass determination accuracy of 0.4% for a 1 μg 252Cf source. Experimental measurements of a 252Cf source demonstrated the system’s practical viability, achieving a mass error of 7.33%. The primary sources of discrepancy between simulation and experiment were identified as imperfect neutron-gamma discrimination and inter-detector neutron cross-talk, which provide clear directions for subsequent system optimization.A six-detector FNMC system was validated for rapid 252Cf assay.Geant4 simulations identified MSR with a 60 ns gate as the most accurate method.Neutron-gamma discrimination and cross-talk were the main limits on measurement accuracy.A six-detector FNMC system was validated for rapid 252Cf assay.Geant4 simulations identified MSR with a 60 ns gate as the most accurate method.Neutron-gamma discrimination and cross-talk were the main limits on measurement accuracy.
