Περίληψη: The paper presents the physics-based broad-band (0–10 Hz) near-fault ground motion synthetics of the 1993 (M w 6.2) Latur (India) earthquake to elucidate the unresolved issues related to this deadliest stable continental region earthquake worldwide at that time. This reverse-slip earthquake occurred in the Deccan formation of the peninsular India and caused the death of around 11 000 people. In the absence of record of this earthquake, we considered eighteen rupture realizations for this unique earthquake using the available information from the published literature. Based on the statistical analysis of simulated and reported intensities, we finalized the appropriate rupture dimension, slip-pattern, focal-position and maximum intensity for the Latur earthquake. Simulated results reveal that the cause of almost complete destruction of traditional buildings and severe damage to collapses of some of the engineered and well-built structures in the 25-villages, situated within 2–3 km NE and 5–6 km SW of the fault-break, were unique unilateral rupture propagation up to the free surface with a large slip, large ground acceleration as well as generation of high frequency Rayleigh waves with large amplitude. The high frequency Rayleigh waves and developed ground displacement with large amplitudes were the reasons behind reported dominant vertical, rolling, swinging and rotational motions as reported by the residents. The largest combined effects of rupture directivity and fling was obtained near the fault-break and a decrease was inferred with an increase of distance from it. However, the role of these effects was negligible in the unexpected damages to the then existing low-story (<4 story) buildings, except likely foundation failure of some of the engineered structures. It is recommended to take into account the effects of rupture-directivity and fling, ground strains and rotations as well as generated high frequency Rayleigh waves in the structural designs near the shallow reverse-slip earthquakes for the development of sustainable and resilience city.
