Abstract (English): This study compared multivariate and stepwise regression models for predicting yield and energy indices in sugar beet under semi-arid conditions, using data from 83 farms in Shahrekord, Iran. Energy indices—energy ratio (ER), energy productivity (EP), specific energy (SE), and net energy gain (NEG)—were calculated from input/output energy equivalents. Average yield was 56.11 t ha⁻¹, with ER = 40.89, EP = 2.43 kg MJ⁻¹, SE = 0.41 MJ kg⁻¹, and NEG = 919,750.28 MJ ha⁻¹. The multivariate model, including interaction and quadratic terms, outperformed the stepwise model (full R² = 98.8% vs. 95.7%; 5-fold CV R² ≈ 91.0% vs. 92.5%). Key interactions— nitrogen×phosphate (positive), phosphate×micronutrients (negative), and labor×nitrogen (positive)—highlighted balanced nutrient management. Diesel and micronutrients together accounted for >64% of total energy input, stressing the need for better machinery efficiency and targeted micronutrient use. For energy indices, multivariate regression achieved excellent fits (R² = 99.54% for ER and EP; 97.66% for SE), with yield, micronutrients, diesel, and nitrogen as the most influential variables. Optimal application ranges for maximizing yield were estimated at 80–90 kg ha⁻¹ (phosphate), 60–70 kg ha⁻¹ (micronutrients), and 60–70 kg ha⁻¹ (nitrogen). These findings offer practical guidance for optimizing energy use, reducing environmental impacts, and promoting sustainable sugar beet production in semi-arid systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
