To treat and reutilize components of electroplating wastewater, we have developed a method that converts this complex wastewater into silicate xerogels via complete gelation of sodium silicate solution (commonly known as water glass, abbreviated as WGS). Herein, Al 2 (SO 4) 3 was used to tune the gelation of WGS in chromium-containing electroplating wastewater. It was demonstrated that the pH of the wastewater-Al 2 (SO 4) 3 -WGS ternary media was highly dependent on the volume and concentration of the added Al 2 (SO 4) 3 solution. Three-stage pH variations, and corresponding a three-stage gelation time curves with the volume of Al 2 (SO 4) 3 solution were revealed and explained. The structural evolution during the gelation process and the transition from wet gels to dry xerogels were analyzed by zeta potential, viscosity and ATR-FTIR measurements. The results suggested that the hydrolysis of Al 2 (SO 4) 3 led to the decrease of pH of the ternary media, accompanied by flocs formation. Both effects facilitated the gelation of WGS in wastewater. Al3+ entered the SiO 2 network via the formation Si-O-Al bonds, increasing the content of Al 2 O 3 in the resulting xerogels. The xerogels could be mesoporous or non-porous with the immobilized components from the wastewater. These xerogels containing all components from the complex electroplating wastewater were directly vitrified into glasses with green color. Overall, the study suggests the possibility of using WGS to efficiently treat electroplating wastewater and subsequently valorize the resulting sludge for glass production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
