Abstract: Two new naphthol‐tethered isoindolone frameworks, namely, 3‐(1‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoyl)‐2‐(2‐hydroxyphenyl)isoindolin‐1‐one 2 and 2‐(1,3‐dioxoisoindolin‐2‐yl)phenyl‐1‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoate 3, have been synthesized from readily accessible ninhydrin‐1‐naphthol adduct and o‐aminophenol. Single‐crystal x‐ray diffraction studies show that π–π stacking among naphthol and isoindolone units, along with hydrogen‐bonding interactions, results in a unique supramolecular sheet structure of compound 2 and zipper arrangement of compound 3. Significantly, compound 2 dosimetrically senses Cu2+ ion via a chemical change leading to the formation of compound 3, which in turn displays Cu2+ sensing ability. UV–vis spectroscopic studies reveal that, upon interaction with Cu2+ ions, both compounds 2 and 3 exhibit concomitant growth of a new absorption band at 500 nm, with detection limits of 6.76 µM and 1.75 µM, respectively. Compound 2 is also capable of sensing Cu2+ ions fluorimetrically. DFT studies are in good agreement with experimental data, indicating that both compounds have through‐bond charge transfer. Overall, the synthesized naphthol‐tethered isoindolinone motifs serve as promising spectrophotometric probes for selective detection of Cu2+, which has not been explored earlier.
