Περίληψη: In ultrasonic testing, when transducers are applied directly to the test material without any intermediary medium, it will produce a reflection of sound waves. Couplant material is needed to deliver the ultrasonic energy from transducer to test part. The use of couplant can be a solution because it can becoming a medium (bridge) for transmitting sound waves from transducers to the test material so that the transducer can read the reflected sound waves. Water can be used as a couplant, but it has shortcomings related to the low density, low ultrasonic speed, low gain, low viscosity, causing corrosion, causing biofouling. This study developed a water-based gel for ultrasonic testing couplant in engineering and medical. The material is a mixture of water, methyl cellulose dan Aloe vera. This research aims to analyze the effect of Aloe vera concentration in water/methyl cellulose/Aloe vera to ultrasonic transmittance and gain (sensitivity) and compared with commercial couplant. The water based couplant gel is synthesized form mixture water/methyl cellulose/aloe vera (H2O/MC/AV). The role of material is water as matrix, methyl cellulose as a crosslinker (thickener) and Aloe vera as bioadditive modifier. The material method formation is gelation reaction mechanism. The research composition is 4:0; 3:1; 2:2; 1:3; 0:4 (%wt) composition of methyl cellulose with Aloe vera. The characterization was FTIR, visual, density, ultrasonic velocity propagation, and ultrasonic gain. The results show that hidroksil structure, transparent gel and good viscosity was achieved. Increasing concentration of Aloe vera decreased the density, ultrasonic speed and transmittance. The optimum transmittance is H2O/MC3%/AV1% material at 0.3892. The optimum gain value (sensitivity) for water based gel is H2O/MC3%/AV1% material at 14.5 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
