This study investigates the juristic preferences of Imam Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Rahūnī in the chapter of testimony (shahādāt) through his marginal commentary (ḥāshiyah) on al-Zarqānī’s commentary on Mukhtaṣar Khalīl. It aims to identify, analyze, and critically evaluate these preferences within the methodological framework of the Mālikī school, while elucidating al-Rahūnī’s approach to juristic preference (tarjīḥ) and assessing the extent to which his opinions conform to, or depart from, the authoritative Mālikī position. The study adopts an inductive method to collect and trace al- Rahūnī’s juristic opinions, an analytical method to examine their legal foundations, a comparative method to evaluate them against the views of leading Mālikī authorities, and a critical method to assess the evidences underlying competing opinions. The findings reveal that al-Rahūnī developed a distinctive juristic methodology characterized by meticulous textual analysis, systematic legal reasoning, and a profound command of Mālikī legal principles. Although the majority of his preferences accord with the relied-upon position of the school, he occasionally exercised independent juristic judgment where he considered alternative evidence more persuasive. The study demonstrates the scholarly significance of his contributions to the development of Mālikī jurisprudence, particularly in the fields of judicial procedure and evidentiary law, and underscores the enduring value of his ḥāshiyah as an authoritative source for advanced research in later Mālikī legal thought.
