National Assessment of Educational Progress (Project) |
| Περίληψη: |
The article critically examines the so-called "Mississippi Miracle," a recent claim of dramatic improvement in Mississippi’s 4th grade reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). It highlights that, similar to past educational "miracles" in Houston and El Paso, much of Mississippi’s reported success may be attributed to factors such as retention policies that prevent low-scoring students from testing, increased exemptions and disability classifications allowing accommodations during testing, statistical adjustments based on inflated poverty rates, and reduced COVID-related learning loss due to more in-person instruction. The article emphasizes the lack of experimental evidence isolating the effects of Mississippi’s Literacy-Based Promotion Act (LBPA) and cautions against uncritical adoption of its policies, noting that improvements have not extended to later grade assessments or other standardized tests. It concludes that apparent large-scale educational gains often reflect administrative and statistical strategies rather than genuine, broad-based improvements in student learning.
