Heavy metal pollution has emerged as a global environmental concern, with copper (Cu) attracting particular attention due to its extensive industrial use and potential ecotoxicity. This study presents a novel method combining enrichment using CH-90Na chelating resin with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the efficient detection of trace Cu in aqueous samples. Through systematic optimisation of adsorption conditions, including a pH of 5, resin dosage of 1.3 g and drying temperature of 40 °C, as well as LIBS parameters, specifically a gate delay of 20 µs and output voltage of 880 V, and introduction of a Cu I resonance doublet self-absorption correction strategy to compensate for resonance line intensity attenuation, a quantitative calibration model was established with excellent linearity (R2 > 0.99) and a low limit of detection of 0.023 mg L−1. The method was successfully applied to industrial wastewater samples, electroplating wastewater and electronic component cleaning wastewater, yielding spike recovery rates of 98.27% to 104.50% and relative errors below 3%, demonstrating high accuracy and robust resistance to matrix interferences. These results demonstrate that CH-90Na resin-assisted LIBS with self-absorption correction provides an efficient and practical approach for trace Cu determination in complex industrial wastewater.
