Micro-regeneration has been popular in major Chinese cities in recent years as a participatory and community-based urban regeneration experiment. This approach is sensitive to the existing built and social fabrics and directly responsive to local residents’ needs for space quality and function upgrades. Through the lens of story and story arc, this paper interprets how the micro-regeneration planning experiment has been portrayed to convey normative values in the context of people-oriented urban regeneration. Analyzing a collection of newspaper reports on various micro-regeneration projects in Shanghai, the paper identifies the elements of the micro-regeneration story arc and discusses the extent to which different actor groups are involved or able to influence the micro-regeneration project processes and outcomes. The paper demonstrates that micro-regeneration in media narratives is a story of “constructive contestation” where the accounts of tensions and contestations serve to highlight consensus and collaboration as the ethos in the new era of urban regeneration.
