Structural strengthening is usually required to repair damaged structural members; the damage is often unexpected and can carry deadly consequences if it involves structural members that are crucial to the load transfer of the structure. When structures are damaged, there needs to be a fast-acting and substantial structural strengthening applied to them. Achieving this with fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP), which is currently the most favoured strengthening material, is made difficult due to the reliance on epoxy adhesives which can need a week to achieve full strength. Furthermore, the glass transition temperature of epoxy is between 50°C to 90°C, during which there will be a loss of bond strength. As an alternative, high-performance fibre reinforced concrete (HRCPC) can be applied to repair damaged concrete. A high-performance concrete contains a high quantity of cementitious binder, and has low water content, while incorporating steel fibres will give a high tensile strength without any reinforcement bars needed. The HRCPC also have a fire resistance similar to normal concrete, so no loss of strength should occur on the HRCPC until the temperature rises above 400°C. In this study, HPFRC confinement was used to repair compressive and tensile damaged concrete cylinders. Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) was used to compare the integrity of damaged and repaired concrete cylinders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
