Περίληψη: Addis Ababa city is an industrialised and densely populated city in Ethiopian. Urban agriculture also practiced in and round the city. Industrial and municipal pollution also has an impact on increasing the level of background radiation. The Little and Big Akaki rivers are the main two rivers the city polluted, mainly due to the discharge of untreated industrial effluents as well as runoff rains from the nearby agricultural areas. The aim of this study was to assess the natural radioactivity concentration and radiological indices of sediment and water samples from Big and Little Akaki rivers. Radioactivity concentrations were measured using a gamma spectrometer equipped with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. In sediment samples, the average activity concentrations were 26.83 ± 1.93 for 226Ra, 50.42 ± 3.90 for 232Th, and 501.8 ± 22.5 Bq/kg for 40K; and <0.78 for 226Ra, <2.82 for 232Th, and 122.25 ± 5.9 Bq/kg for 40K in water samples. These radioactivity concentrations are compared with the worldwide average values. Radiological hazard indicators, such as radium equivalent activity (Raeq), absorbed dose rate (Dr), outdoor annual effective dose rate (Deff), external hazard index (Hex), internal hazard index (Hin), and gamma radiation representative-level index (Iγ) were calculated using the activity concentration of radionuclides in sediment samples. All computed radiological hazard indices were below the world-allowable limit values. These results imply that naturally occurring radionuclides present in the sediment and water of the Akaki rivers do not pose an immediate radiological threat to the public and environment.
