| Abstract (English): |
THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE RESULTS of the archaeometallurgical analysis of a selection of copper − based artefacts dated to the 14th and 15th century from the castle of La Estrella de Montiel (Ciudad Real, Spain). Elemental composition, metallographic, and provenance analyses are used to determine the raw materials, alloying practices—including recycling and mixing—and production technologies involved in the chaîne opératoire of copper metallurgy in Christian medieval Spain. This presents new data about the specialisation of metal crafts in the Middle Ages, the standardisation of production, and the economic, social, and technological constraints faced. The article also addresses issues related to distribution and trade in metal in the medieval West, presenting a preliminary hypothesis of the sources of raw materials based on a selection of samples.
