Περίληψη: The article focuses on the reconstruction of Proto-Austronesian (PAn) voiced coronal obstruent phonemes, addressing the challenges and inconsistencies in previous studies regarding their number and phonetic values. It identifies two primary phonemes: PAn *d (a dental stop) and *ɖ (a retroflex stop), while exploring the irregularities in their reflexes across different Austronesian languages, particularly in word-initial positions. The paper suggests that these irregularities stem from historical language contact and phonetic confusion between the two phonemes. Ultimately, it advocates for a simplified phonemic inventory that aligns with the observed data from various Austronesian branches, emphasizing the need for further phonetic research to clarify these distinctions.
