AbstractKouna (Schoenoplectus lacustris) reeds are sustainable materials that have seen a multitude of applications in the handicrafts sector. Kouna plants are an integral part of the local ecosystem and are abundantly available in the region of Manipur. Despite their availability and utility, this resource remains underexplored and underutilized. Local artisans mainly use these reeds to make handicraft products. Due to this limited exploration, there is a significant gap in the documentation and promotion of Kouna craftsmanship. Hence, this study explores the traditional techniques used in Kouna weaving, from harvesting and processing the reeds to crafting various handicraft products. Along with the documentation of Kouna weaving practices, diverse handicraft items such as bags, cushions, baskets, and window blinds were developed. Mainly in the Kouna weaving Nga Maku, Jali, Lei Mayek, Chuthek Mayek, Binni Mayek, Chumsha Mayek and Faklong (Param Mayek) weave patterns are employed. The research emphasizes the economic and environmental implication of Kouna weaving, indicating its role in local resource utilization, empowering local artisans, and fostering sustainable livelihoods. It also documents the potential of Kouna handicrafts to enhance nature-friendly interior design products, offering a sustainable alternative to synthetic products. By preserving traditional weaving techniques and promoting traditional craftsmanship, the study endorses for enhanced market opportunities and policy initiatives to boost the recognition and success of Kouna products.
