Objectives The rate of suicide in England and Wales is at its highest level since 1999 despite increased focus on public awareness and research. This paper evaluates the outcomes of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy offered as a community-based therapeutic intervention in secondary care mental health services for individuals exhibiting suicidality with resultant psychological distress. The intervention aimed to reduce psychological distress related to suicidality and improve general psychopathology. Methods A non-randomised, pre-test post-test design was utilised. Participants (n=5) undertook a range of psychometric measures before undergoing a course of EMDR therapy. The Leeds Reliable Change Index (RCI) was utilised to establish the reliability of observed changes. Clinical records were examined to gain an overview of participant outcomes after therapy. Results All 13 variables measured saw an average improvement between pre- and post-intervention. An examination of the statistical reliability of each variable change across all participants individually, was also generally positive. Long-term outcomes for participants between eight and twenty-one months after completion of therapy were encouraging, with no participants reporting any further suicidal thoughts as of their last contact. Conclusions These findings provide preliminary evidence as to the feasibility of EMDR therapy for suicidality and suggest that EMDR can have lasting effects in reducing psychological distress associated with suicidal behaviour. It strengthens the case for the integration of EMDR into mental health crisis, hospital liaison and acute services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
