| description | Pinna nobilis (Linnaeus, 1758) the largest endemic bivalve in Mediterranean, is under a serious threat caused by the spread of the invasive parasite Haplosporidium pinnae. One of the remaining pen shell populations is still thriving in Kalloni Gulf (Lesvos Island). Herein we assess the species’s status through snorkeling in 20 sites located at Kalloni Gulf. Three distinct sub-regions indicated threw the assessment results with an average mortality of 61.8%. Mortality rates were low at the northeastern part of the Gulf, high at the central part of the Gulf, while at the southwestern part of the Gulf no individual was detected. Abundance was estimated at 683938 individuals (95% confidence interval: 321983-1452779) by using distance sampling techniques in the inner part of the gulf (1.7 km^2). Detectability and density estimations are also shown for the best model among those tested according Akaike’s Information Criterion. |
