Summary:Working at sea can be a hazardous occupation if the proper precautions are not taken. Risk management should be conducted when carrying out duties onboard. Nowadays it seems impossible to carry out almost any activity onboard without previously assessing the hazards related to it. This study will identify the most hazardous cases in which risk exists during the operation of an oil tanker. In addition, it will reveal what tools seafarers have in order to reduce these risks and achieve the safe management of the vessel. Finally, we will question if all of the recommended procedures and guidelines are useful in the everyday activities and the point to which they are followed, considering the increasing workload of the persons onboard
