Περίληψη:The need to reduce the production cost and enlarge the food quantity over time affected the safety of the agri-food products. In order consumers to be able to look for hygienic agri-food products, they searched for products that are characterized by a “quality”. European Union introduced a system for the protection of the quality agricultural products and foodstuffs, where quality products are classified into three categories. One of these categories are the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) products, for which the name of the region that is used to describe an agricultural product or a foodstuff constitutes an indication of its quality, it confirms-validates the quality of the product. The dissertation analyses the geography of the PGI products in Europe. The mapping of the PGI products is based on the five (5) classification levels of the N.U.T.S. (Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics) και L.A.U. (Local Administrative Unit) system that European Union created for the administrative division of the economic territory of the European states for statistical reasons. The analysis results reveal that the production of the PGI products is characterized by a geographical continuity mostly in the western and southern parts of Europe, while its presence is obvious in almost all European islands.
