Περίληψη:The present thesis focuses on the history of the Asclepieion of Kos through the philological and literary sources. The history of the island is inextricably linked to the Asclepieion, whose fame crossed the narrow borders of the island and reached all parts of the known world. A whole world moves around the Asclepieion. Despite its initial religious character, later on it becomes a healing center, with organized spaces, suitable for all stages of the patient’s treatment. Patients not only enjoyed the appropriate therapy but were also entertained with theatrical performances. At the same time, the right to immunity by sending theories to many cities, as well as the organization of Great Asclepieia are documented archaeologically. Moreover, the quantity and variety of medical tools found at the site, not only confirm the level of the medical services provided but also the development that had taken place. Asclepius, the Asclepiades and Hippocrates play an important role. The latter, based on reason and rationalism, accomplished to establish the main principles of the medical science. His contribution is reflected in coins, rings, mosaics and statues. The sacred laws related to the site, the right to immunity, the inscriptions, coins, votive offerings, etc., highlight the importance of the Asclepieion as a religious and healing center. All the above are confirmed by the inscriptions found at the site, which reveal the economic, religious, political and cultural life of the sanctuary and the island. There is a detailed and thorough documentation of all the activities that took place at the sanctuary, possibly in order to enhance its prestige.
